Fic and art: The Book (Supernatural, Gen)

Sometimes, an idea just won't let go. Waaaaaay back in March, [info]donutsweeper wrote a really sweet Supernatural Weechesters story called Another One For the Book. At the time, I had a short discussion in comments about what would go under each letter. Most of the time, I don't think any more about these conversations, but for some reason, this one stuck.

So I decided to make The Book (capital letters compulsory). As you do. And because insanity loves company, I roped [info]rustydog in to give me a hand. The result is some kind of hybrid between fanfic, meta, fanart and a labour of love. Certainly it took me long enough to put the basics together, and it took forever for the parcel to make its way across the ocean so that Rusty could finish it off and send it on to its final destination with Donut.

Below the cut is the story I wrote to go in the front of The Book, along with an album of pictures to show the making process. Rusty performed sterling beta duties as well as providing the original art work for the book.

Special thanks must go to [info]nightdog_barks who sent me a huge bundle of newspapers which provided both a useful source of cuttings for The Book and a slightly alarming (for a Brit) insight into Southern US culture. I'm not used to seeing so many adverts for churches and I'm not used to seeing any for guns! Anyway, the papers were essential to the making of the book, and enable the whole project to get off the ground.

Home! Holiday was wonderful, pictures to follow as ever, work's nuts (I think at this point I have more books than Blackwell's) and I'm already knackered.

Therefore, in lieu of content, I bring you links:

In honour (or more appropriately 'honor) of the holiday weekend, [info]cm_exchange is keeping sign-ups open until the 9th. It's a Criminal Minds Christmas fic exchange, and produces some lovely stories. I can't commit to it this year, but hope lots of you can! Sign up here

The [info]spn_summergen masterlist is live and can be found here.

I received This Bitter Earth by [info]art_savage, of which I've only read the first little bit, but it looks to be an awesome SPN/Criminal Minds crossover that I can't wait to get my teeth into.

My own entry spawned a story that didn't meet the prompt before I wrangled it into shape, and despite current misgivings about anything I've ever written (I'm in the downswing - this too shall pass), I'm quietly pleased with it. I'm finding lately that I love creating OCs and am interested to see where this is going to take the writing. Anyway, the story is linked below.

The Hustlers
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Author's Notes: Huge thanks to [info]greyias for last-minute beta and hand-holding.
Summary: Sometimes, it's better to just not see anything.

Hopefully I'll be more with it once work is under control and my brain starts behaving again. Time to crack out the light-box, I think...

Finally

Reading - carrying pile of books
After a week, this cold finally seems to be actually getting better, instead of pretending to get better, then knocking me over when I try to do anything. Which is good, because I've got lots to do today before I go on holiday \o/ I can't wait!

The last few days have been wonderfully uneventful, what with pretty much going home and going straight to bed, so all I've really had on my mind has been what I'm packing for Menorca. The physical stuff is easy, but trying to choose fic to take is much harder. I'm definitely putting in the [info]tardis_bigbang complete PDF, and most of the stuff from my "fic-unread" tags at Delicious. But as for anything else? Looks like I'll be paying a visit to the [info]crack_van

But it also got me thinking, what would be my 'Desert Island Fics"? Eight fics and one podfic (the programme does 8 music + 1 book, so that seems fair) that I would take to my desert island.

Man, that's a hard one. Right, let's see... )

What about you guys? What fics would you take to a Desert Island? What fics and podfic should I take to Menorca? I seem to have missed so much lately!

So. I kind of sort of helped [info]51stcenturyfox to hijack a thread over at [info]unfeathered's journal which has spawned a ficlet. Just over 700 words, Jack and John Hart, Gen. More or less.

Now polished, headered and posted to [info]torchwood_decaf

And it has BIG spoilers for Torchwood 3.02, so it's going under a cut )

We have lift off! The front page is here, from where you can link to everything else. We also have 45 stories and gajillions of pieces of art (which may contain spoilers, just so you know), which is all kinds of awesome.

My work? Well, just a brief link for now and more details and squee tomorrow. But I've now been at work for nearly 12 hours and am kind of ready to go home. Admiration for artists will also be expressed tomorrow because DAMN these guys are good.

Nothing Else But Change
Torchwood (pre-series) | PG | gen | 27,000 words

Everything changed, everything moved on. Everything except Jack.

Betas: [info]rustydog and [info]donutsweeper
Notes: My gratitude to my betas cannot be textually rendered. They have held my hand, passed the tissues, corrected grammar and typos, forced me to write better and made sure that I had everything I needed to write this. It's not possible to thank them too much, for services above and beyond the call of duty or friendship. Remaining deficiencies are all my own work.

Art is by [info]in_the_bottle and [info]jhava and is just...well. Click through to the story and you'll see why it's so awesome.

Right. Home now. Catch y'all tomorrow.

Fifteen things

Writing - will write for coffee
My head is feeling much better, although still a little achy, so I'm glad these are written and just need pasting in. I wrote these on the train on the way up to Manchester, and I think at this point, I have to admit defeat on the rest of the 'Five Things…' prompts. It's possible that I actually have to admit defeat on Torchwood fic full-stop, but that's another meta that can wait until we see what S3 brings us. For the rest, I just can't make them work, and trying is just depressing me, so I'm calling it quits here. Sorry, but hopefully I'll have plenty of fic for you over the next few months to make up for it!

Anyway, sorry to those whose prompts will remain unwritten. Here are some more to be going on with:

I can't remember who prompted this and so this is for whoever gave me the prompt…

Five people who entered the Hub before the current Torchwood crew [Torchwood (duh); drabbles] )

I do remember that this one is for [info]miss_zedem

Five Times Sheppard didn't see it coming [SGA; list-form] )

I had 2 Discworld prompts, but I think this is for [info]mad_jaks. Or [info]aeron_lanart, who just doesn't remember that it's her ;)

Five times DEATH took a holiday [Discworld; dialogue-only] )

Just a swift comment-fic written for [info]with_apostrophe, who inadvertently prompted it :) Set in the Port Call AU.

Just a few ficlets, really, mostly from the 'Five Things...' meme. And yes, I still have the list and am working slowly thought it. Still, at least I've added a new fandom to my collection :)

Stargate: Atlantis

Five things John wishes Rodney hadn't touched

Doctor Who

Five moments from five lives

Five things Donna wishes the Doctor had never told her

Five planets the Doctor will never, ever visit

Five things Martha Jones wonders about

Five things Jack doesn't keep on his desk any more

Supernatural

Five times the boys ran away

This was initially inspired by this kissing meme, which [info]aoibhe linked to. However, after reading the other comment-fics there (something for everyone! I might even see if I can write something that acutally works for it...), I'm fairly sure this is not the fic they're looking for.

But since I wrote it and got it beta'd and everything, I'm posting it here anyway.

Title: Let There Be Light
Words: 789
Rating: PG
Characters: Mary/John
Spoilers: Episode tag to 4x03 "In The Beginning"
Notes: Huge thanks to [info]pwcorgigirl and [info]rustydog for the lightning-fast beta.

Summary: Everything comes back to John in a rush, and not much of it is good.

And you thought I'd forgotten about these. :P A Whoniverse set this time, with thanks to the prompters. I think I'm going to attempt the SGA and Criminal Minds ones next, but first I have to go descale the kettle.

Thank you so much for last night guys. Recently, I've been getting the prods I need to get myself sorted out, so I'm going to try to get on that really soon.

Today I have been awesome because I have done the ironing. I HATE ironing.

And because I always do what my flist tells me to, allow me to promote:

International Fannish Feel Yourself Up Day

Gals, if you're not checking for lumps on a regular basis, get right on that. Quickly, please. Too many folks I know are being hit by cancer right now. This one's for [info]fan_eunice, who's just starting to fight this sucker. And Guys, keep an eye (or, you know, hand) on the relevant parts of your anatomy too, okay? (that means armpits too - lymphoma's actually more common in men) You find anything, you go right to the doctor's, you hear me? I don't care if you think it's nothing. I don't care if you think you're being stupid. That's a helluva lot better than the alternatives. Go.

Other things roll on apace, including my growing love for Supernatural. You guys who promised me recs, I think I'm ready for them now (I'm up to 2.08 "Crossroad Blues" so no major spoily fics, tx). I'd particularly like podfic recs if you have them, since I'm about to spend a while on trains and away from home, and could use good fic to listen to. I know the stuff on my Zen practically off by heart by now.

ETA: Okay, please could more people with microphones start recording in the Gen category? Please? Because it's getting embarrassing to click on the Torchwood:Gen category and have to scroll past all the fics I recorded. I mean, I recorded them because I love them, but it's weird listening to your own voice...

So that's two ways you can be awesome for me today. How else have you been awesome?

Review: Wrong Turn (Criminal Minds)

  • Feb. 7th, 2009 at 9:28 AM
Gerbera
As some of you know, I've recently been bemoaning the state of Genfic (leave a prompt for the Gen battle here!) and the state of fic in Criminal Minds in particular. So it only seems fair that when I come across something I like, I tell you about that as well. I'm trying to give full and proper reviews of stories, as much to get myself thinking as anything else, but also because I find so little long case-fic in this fandom that I feel like waving my hands madly and saying 'read this!' when I come across it.

Wrong Turn by [info]buffyaddict13 and [info]cycatryx is a long case-style fic, that simultaneously demonstrates that it's possible to write good case-fic in Criminal Minds, and why it's so hard.

I can't say too much about the plot without giving it all away, so let me just give you the summary:

Reid, Hotch, Prentiss, and Morgan find themselves trapped by an UnSub after an investigation takes a terrifying turn. Garcia, Rossi, and JJ try to help before the rest of the team's time runs out.

Quick, non-spoilery review? This is a strong, well-plotted, tense case-fic, where everyone sounds like themselves, and the unsub is a real human being as well as a lurking monster.

Full review with minor spoilers )

Thanks to people giving in to my shameless pleading for help, I have four ficlets finished (and a bad case of alliteration).

All are part of the [info]halfamoon fest, which is for fanworks about female characters.

To spare you yet more spamming, I've backdated them, but all the links are below. I'll do a round-up once the 14 days are over, but everything can be found on the halfamoon tag.

And yes, there is a theme. I'm sure you'll spot it...

CTU
Criminal Minds; Jordan Todd; G; Set at an indeterminate point after 4x13 'Bloodline'; ~490 words
Summary: Everything is just how she left it

Home
SGA; Teyla; G; Set during 'The Return Part 1'; ~630 words
Summary: Coming back to her people has not been coming home

Domestic
Doctor Who; Martha; G; Set after 'Last of the Time Lords'; ~570
Summary: Martha Jones. Defender of the Earth.

What Ails You
Torchwood; Tosh, Gwen; G; Set between S1 and S2; 814 words
Summary: Four weeks. Still no sign.

My first Criminal Minds fic in 2 years, and I'm still coming back to LDSK. I'd love to know what it is about that episode that gets me, but for now, I'll settle for the story ideas and leave it at that.

Title: Tilting at Windmills
Author: [info]jadesfire2808
Words: ~1700
Rating/Warnings: G/None
Spoilers: Episode tag to LDSK
Notes: With thanks to [info]donutsweeper and [info]miss_zedem who leave my stories better than they found them
